Quarterly Progress Report

10/1/2011 thru 12/31/2011 SWAP Grant # 11-G550-27FL

Quarter Highlights:

On November 10, 2011 the Davenport Zoning Board of Adjustment approved a Special Use Permit to allow us to open the Architectural Rescue Shop.

As of November 16, 2011 we began opening the Shop on Fridays from 10AM to 3PM on a regular basis.

We completed about 90% of the barn siding and started using the barn for storage of salvage.

We recorded 319 volunteer hours during the quarter for a total of 883 volunteer hours for the entire year.

We sold about 4 tons of salvage for $3,236 for a total of $7,103 for all of 2011. 2010’s total was $2,682.

We have been selected to do salvage of 2 homes that Palmer College is demolishing but will have to wait on the Davenport Historic Preservation Commission approval and warmer weather before proceeding.

--------------------------

Due to our labor intensive barn salvage operation this summer and the extra work involved in installing the old barn siding and doors on our new storage barn, we were forced to moved the completion of the building until June 2012.  However, we still are able to use the building as is and it has allowed us to open the shop for one day a week on a regular basis. This has already gotten us several donations of salvage items and generated many more inquiries. Also the building with the old barn siding and doors is a perfect match for the neighborhood, a great example of reuse of old material and has been admired by many.

As of this report we have incurred construction expenses of $17,604. We have filed 2 separate grant expense sheets; June 12, 2011 for $2,879 with a DNR share of $2,159 and October 11, 2011 for $18,004 with a DNR share of $10,649. To date we have received one DNR payment of $2,159 for the first expense sheet.

Recycling ordinance committee

A vote on the Davenport Historic Preservation Commission new preservation ordinance that included  ”Before a demolition permit is issued, the petitioner shall provide evidence to the Commission that a recycling/salvage company has completed an assessment of the feasibility of diverting as much reusable materials as possible away from the landfill.” is still on hold because of other concerns.

In talking to Kathy Morris of the Scott County Waste Commission about how to proceed, we decided to delay approaching the mayor about forming a recycling task force until after city elections and 2012 budget meetings.
