Historic grocery open for inspection
By The Quad-City Times | Friday, December 01, 2006“Please stop by — rain, snow or storms — and check
out our progress,” says Jack Haberman, a neighborhood resident and a
founder of the Gateway Redevelopment Group.
The former Jipp grocery at 732 Gaines St. had most recently been a
laundry and was in a highly dilapidated state when the group took it
over.
The group has spent about $85,000 so far to stabilize the building,
but needs about $12,000 more to finish. Still, much progress has
been made, and there already is a lot of beautiful salvage inside,
including stair railings, tin ceilings, oak flooring and doors.
The home tour, with four homes, will be the same hours that the Jipp
is open.
