History: This McClelland- style house was home to F.
G. Clausen, one of Davenport’s best known architects. Clausen,
an 1869 immigrant from Germany, designed the home next door

The Hamburg Historic District, popularly known as “The Gold Coast,”
is located on the hills above downtown Davenport. Its boundaries are
5th to 9th, Ripley to Vine Streets. With
much of it falling within the area that were part of the original 1836
plat of Davenport, it is proud to call itself “Davenport’s First Neighborhood.”
In 2011, it was designated as one of 10 Great Neighborhoods by the American
Planning Association. The APA honors places of “exemplary character,
quality and planning.” It is the first neighborhood in Iowa to receive
this award.
The Gold Coast-Hamburg Historic District Association is comprised of
owners and residents of the Hamburg Historic District. Its goals include
preservation of its built heritage, collection of its historical information,
and bringing its residents together to support the organization and
become a more powerful voice within the community.
